The Consortium


LIAMA is an operative research hub, hosted by CASIA, the Institute of Automation, of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Created by INRIA and CAS in 1997, LIAMA conducts research, training and transfer projects in Computer Science,
Automation and Applied Mathematics. The projects are performed in cooperation between Europe and China, and can be
hosted by any partner institution.

LIAMA has been selected by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology as a “National Center for International Research”
in june 2008 to reinforce the cooperation potential in the fields of ICT.

LIAMA is managed by a consortium of partners which has been established in October 2008. This consortium is open to
Chinese and European institutions active in research and development in the fields of ICT. The partners are research
institutes, universities and companies active in R&D.

The steering committee of LIAMA examines the application of candidate partners after they have informed the directors of
LIAMA of their intention to join LIAMA. The chairman of the Steering Committee is Professor MA Songde.

LIAMA’s missions are:

  • setup research projects involving Chinese and European scientists ;
  • promote open source software development in both regions ;
  • strengthen relations between the academic and industrial communities in China and Europe ;
  • reinforce Chinese participation to European projects and conversely ;
  • develop training through research of Chinese and European students and scientists.


Liama staff consists of a team of over 120 permanent people, senior scientists and students from China, France, as well as other European countries.
